Claremont Graduate University
Claremont Graduate University (CGU) commissioned ACMP to prepare a campus Master Plan. This project, completed in 2002, resulted in a plan that built on the University's mission and provides a vision for future growth. The University’s development needs will be integrated with the good neighbor requirements to the adjacent residential community and the surrounding Claremont Colleges.
The ACMP project team formulated clear, simple design and planning criteria to guide overall campus decision-making and to ensure that the most important qualities of the campus are protected, while those needing alterations are changed. The criteria developed for CGU encompasses the issues of building form, siting, materials and massing, but goes beyond to pinpoint the relationship between the campus and the community, the reinforcement of place identity on the campus, the features of the physical campus that support CGU's specific constituency and give it a competitive edge among its rivals, and the requirement for incorporating technological advancement into future growth.
Design guidelines include methods for maintaining the campus' aesthetic quality and unique, small-scale environment through definitions of building setbacks, heights, open spaces, signage, landscape architecture, and art in public areas.
