Villa Park Orchard Packing House

Adaptive Reuse

Chapman University

Orange, California

The Villa Park Orchard Packing House Adaptive Reuse project will provide food service, gathering, recreational and educational uses to support the new housing located adjacent to the site. In addition, the revitalized building will house the Hilbert Museum; a gallery specializing in California Scene Painting. The project will provide a variety of outdoor gathering spaces, along with parking adjacent to the packing house and the historical ice house. The north side of the packing house will be exposed and faced with cement plaster. A new glass enclosed entry, a landscaped courtyard and terraced garden will provide a welcoming face to the public and outdoor gathering opportunities for gallery events.

The gallery will take advantage of the north facing saw tooth clerestory windows. In addition to the proper gallery space, a bookstore, offices, extensive storage and a research space will be included in the gallery. A space located on the lower level and accessed by an open communicating stair from the upper floor gallery, will be used as a temporary gallery.

The balance of the building will be furnished with food service options to serve students and visitors to the building. There will be an abundance of seating and gathering spaces, along with various classrooms and recreational spaces. A laundry will be provided on the lower level next to a tea house. A feature of the renovation will be the addition of a large amphitheater connecting the upper level with the lower level, and providing seating for events or casual gathering. The amphitheater opens directly onto the shared courtyard space through 3 glazed vertical bi-fold doors. The elevation is opened up to allow views out and daylight in.
