On September 30, 2026, Los Angeles County celebrated the groundbreaking of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Drop-In Center in Willowbrook. The event brought together Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, the Department of Mental Health, and the Willowbrook Youth Advisory Board to mark an important investment in young people’s well-being.
Designed by AC Martin, the 9,000-square-foot center will provide healthcare, counseling, and daily living services in a safe, inclusive environment, including support for youth transitioning out of foster care. The design prioritizes dignity, comfort, and choice, creating a welcoming place where young people can access services and build connections.
A trauma-informed approach shapes the building’s spaces and materials. Natural light, mass timber, and soft finishes create a warm atmosphere, while a double-height living room provides a central gathering space. A social stair connects visitors to services upstairs, and a sheltered courtyard offers a place to pause outdoors. Lounge areas, a kitchen, laundry facilities, lockers, and counseling and exam rooms support everyday needs. Quiet spaces and varied seating give youth the flexibility to gather with others, speak with staff, or find a more private place to recharge.
AC Martin is proud to help bring this community resource to life, creating an environment that supports access to care, personal independence, and a sense of belonging.
