Avalon SDSU Mission Valley Groundbreaking

San Diego, CA - A groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 6, 2025 marking the start of construction on Avalon Mission Valley. AvalonBay Communities was selected by SDSU to develop the project with AC Martin as the designer and architect.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria addressed the crowd with enthusiasm, expressing his excitement for the project and recognizing the team’s hard work in bringing it to life. He commended their dedication to creating a thoughtful and impactful space that will serve the community for years to come. Mayor Gloria noted that the project will not only enhance the surrounding area, but also establish a vibrant new destination for a wide range of events at Snapdragon Stadium—fostering connection, pride, and a sense of place for residents and visitors alike.
SDSU President Adela de la Torre also shared many postivie thoughts on the project and it's impact to the community.
“This development is designed primarily for our neighbors, our community, and for San Diego residents,” said SDSU President Adela de la Torre. “Together with our civic and community partners, we're creating a dynamic, walkable neighborhood that links transit, recreation, and innovation; unlocking opportunity and access for all.”
The development, situated east of Snapdragon Stadium, will create 621 apartments, offering a range of studio to three-bedroom units to accomodate single residents and families. It will also include approximately 30,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space, anchored by a grocery store to server residents and neighbors alike.
